Description

INTRODUCTION Nicotine, a major toxic component of cigarette smoke, is generally regarded to be a primary risk factor in the development of cardio vasculare disorders, pulmonary disease and lung cancer (Jung et al., 2001), Nicotine has been reported to induce oxidative stress both in vivo and in vitro (Suleyman et al., 2002). Oxidative stress occurs when there is excessive free radial production and or low anti oxidant defense, and results in a chemical alternations of biomoleculs causing structural and function modification (Chiarugi, 2003). The mechanisms of free radical generation by nicotine are not clear. However, it has been reported that nicotine disrupts the mitochondrial respiratory chain leading to an increased generation of superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide (Yildiz et al., 1998). The potential damage that can be caused by free radicals is normally minimized by a combination of biological antioxidant systems including enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions.
